Apple is always coming out with a new iPhone every year, and they just keep getting better and better.  Apple’s new iPhone 8 will have your mind blown away.  What’s different? Let’s start by design. Apple has been using an aluminum body since 2012 to make the iPhone different from other devices.  Apple has changed its design to a glass body and edge-to-edge OLED display that will now include an integrated Touch ID fingerprint sensor and front-facing camera. Although glass is more fragile and heavy than aluminum, Apple is said to be using glass technology and materials like Gorilla Glass to prevent the phones from breaking.

There will be no home button on the new model, as in previous models.  The new iPhone will also have a 5.5-inches of the usable area now.  Rather than having an LCD, the new iPhone 8 is said to have a flexible plastic OLED.  An OLED display eliminates the need for the backlighting that’s used in traditional LCDs, which would allow Apple to cut down on the thickness and weight of the display used in the device. OLED displays can also be flexible, and their displays offer better contrast ratio, better colors, improved angles that you can view, better power efficiency which helps maximize battery life, and a quicker response time than an LCD for faster refresh rates. OLED displays don’t have the lifespan of an LCD and unfortunately, they are more prone to water damage.  Rumor has it that there are going to be 3 iPhone 8 models available.  They say that there is going to be a premium OLED model and two standard LCD devices.  The two standard LCD devices might have sizes that include 4.7, 5 (OLED), and 5.5 inches.  One of the models will have the glass body, but rumors disagree on what the other two models will be made from.

We all hate it when we have to have all kinds of wires hanging around to charge our phones, so Apple has decided to make the iPhone 8 have wireless charging capabilities.  It is to be rumored that Apple will instead of using long-range wireless charging techniques, it will be using an inductive-style wireless charging solution.  This is something similar to their other product, the Apple Watch.  There is some confusion however over the charging method that Apple will use and how it will be implemented.  Some assume that it will be built in with the iPhone and others are assuming that you are going to have to purchase a separate accessory for this.  Long-range wireless charging technology is great because it doesn’t require a charging source.  There are obstacles to overcome such as the loss of power transfer efficiency that occurs when the distance between the transmitter and the receiver are increased. Doing this causes batteries further away from a charging source to charge more slowly.  We all know how we hate to wait for our phones to charge so this would be a slight downfall.

Some other features that the iPhone 8 is supposed to have are more advanced biometric features such as facial recognition or iris scanning, perhaps powered by a new front-facing camera system.  The iPhone 8 could include facial and gesture recognition capabilities, which could be powered by a laser and infrared sensor located near the front-facing camera.  It is also said to have a 3D facial recognition feature.

Having the facial and gesture recognition capabilities is going to provide more security to the users and how cool is it that is it going to be 3D!  With the facial recognition feature, it is said that it might have iris scanning technology included.  This will allow users to unlock their devices with an eye scan.  If this is true, this is probably one of the best security protection measures that Apple has taken.  You won’t have to worry about someone getting into your phone because they know your passcode or because they know the pattern that you set up.  They won’t be able to get in without your eyes!  The iPhone 8 is also expected to faster and more efficient with the 10-nanometer A11 chip that Apple has decided to use.

The storage on the phone is supposed to include NAND flash memory from Samsung.  The RAM on the iPhone 8 is still going to be the same as the iPhone 7 Plus, which is 3GB.  We all hate it when our phone starts to die in about 4 hours due to the battery; so, Apple has decided to expand the battery life of the iPhone 8.  It is rumored that the iPhone 8 will have a far bigger battery.  The iPhone 8 may feature enhanced Siri functionality as well.  It’s not clear what an enhanced version of Siri would be able to do, but it might include an overall refinement to an assistant’s ability to respond to contextual requests and other dialogue.  It’s not clear if improved Siri capabilities will be introduced in or even available for multiple devices and tied specifically to the iPhone 8.

Of course, you probably are all wondering what the pricing on this updated new device is going to be right?  Well, it is going to be more expensive than the current high-end lineup.  The price is rumored to be $1,000 or even higher for the iPhone 8.  It is also said that it is going to be available in 64 GB and 256 GB.  It isn’t clear if both models are going to be more than $1,000 or just the 256GB one.

The iPhone 8 is still under development so of course, we could see some changes. Who knows what else they can think of to add to this phone.  Some say that since Apple usually releases its iPhones in September 2017, we will see it then, but some say it will not be until the fall of 2017.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the iPhone 8 has in store for us.
